Home / Setup AVS Server
|
|
|
Following are some basic network setup information. If
you know what's IP address and port forwarding etc., you can skip them.
-
AtHome Camera App is designed for home users, who typically connect their home
computers to the Internet through a wired or wireless router. Here is the
diagram to show the connections:
-
In order to connect from outside through 3G or EDGE, you need:
-
Know your router's external IP address
-
Set up port forwarding.
If your router support uPnP (99% of modern routers support uPnP) and not been
disabled, and your firewall does not block it, the auto-detection should do both
of above for you.
-
If you do not know what is IP address and port forwarding, you can think of
your home as an example. IP address on the Internet is just like your home
street address in the city (or on the earth). It is unique on the Internet, so
that you can connect from outside on your 3G iPhone. Router acts like a doorman
in front of your home to answer all the connection inquiries. Router gets
external IP address from your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Behind the router, you many have several computers, each computer also need an
address, so that you know which is which. The router assigns local network IP
address to your computer, like 192.168.1.100. Those IP address sometimes also
called fake IP address, since they are not visible to the outside.
Only router's external IP address is visible to the outside on the Internet.
Port forwarding: You may have several doors in your home, but each IP
address has 65535 ports. AVS streaming server use 8001 or up. (If 8001 is
already used by other program, you can use 8002, etc. since there can be only
one program listening on each port). Since your computer is inside your home
and behind the router, you have to tell the router (the doorman) to forward any
connection request for one port (like 8001) to your computer inside, this is
called 'port forwarding'.
-
When AVS streaming server starts up, it will try to do both of above tasks for
you when you click on the button "automatically detect streaming IP address and
setup port forwarding" in the Settings Dialog. The auto-detection is based on
uPnP protocol, which is supported by almost all routers. If detection failed,
you can try:
-
re-power your router, and reboot your computer, try again.
-
Check your firewall setting, TCP port 2869 or UDP port 1900 are not blocked.
-
Login to your router, make sure uPnP is not disabled.
More details refer to Auto configuration for
connection through 3G or EDGE
-
Although rare, but there are chances that uPnP cannot work out, and manual
setup is needed. It is not that hard, as long as you know how to log in to your
router. See detail at manual configuration
for connection through 3G or EDGE
