  1. Which OS the server support ?

The AVS (AtHome Video Streaming) server will run on Windows XP and Vista, and MAC OS 10.5 and 10.6 (Currently, one server on a Mac can only support one camera at a time, and user can select which one to use if there are more than one cameras are detected.)

  2. How to set up the streaming IP address?

If you like to connect to your home computer from outside, you need an IP address which can be seen from the Internet. For most home users, they do not have a static IP address, and mostly likely, the computer will connect to the Internet through a router (Linksys, DLink, etc.). If this is the case for you, you can use the auto-configuration features the server provides, just click on the button "Click to automatic detect streaming IP address and setup port forwarding", the server will auto-detect your router's external IP address and fill in as streaming IP address.

For detailed instruction on network setup, goto:

Server configuration for connection through 3G or EDGE

  3. What can I do if the auto setup failed?

The first thing you can try is to repower your router (unplug the power cord of the router, wait 15 seconds, and plug back), then restart the streaming server and try the auto detection again.
If still fails, you can also login to your router and directly configure your router for the port forwarding. For example, if you are using Linksys router, you can login to your router, click on "Status" tab on the top right, you will see your router's IP address, and you can copy and type into the streaming IP address field. And click on "Applications and Gaming" tab, to add port forwarding.

For step-by-step on port forwarding set up, goto:

    Manually Setup for AVS server

  4. What can I do if my computer directly connects to the Internet, not through a router?

If you directly connect your computer to the Internet without a router, you do not need an auto detection process. You can type "ipconfig" in a "Command Prompt" windows, you will see your computer's IP address. You can just type into streaming IP address field.

  5. How to choose the streaming port?

When you invite your friends to visit your home, you tell him/her your street address ( The same as the IP address on the Internet), and you may also tell him/her which door he/she should knock. In the world of the Internet, each IP address can have 65536 port (That's lots of doors). Some ports are well known and used by popular programs, for example, port 80 is used for http protocol for the web server.
In our case, we suggest you can choose a port from 8001 to 40000. In case the port is already used by other program (AVS server tell you), you need select another one.

If you manually configure your router, you need type in the right port number during port forwarding set up.

  6. How to check firewall settings on my router?

Some routers also have firewall settings, which may block all connection requests from outside.

For example, for some models of Linksys routers, you need login and go to "Security", then "Firewall", and check to make sure "Block Anonymous Internet Request" is disabled.

For Netgear routers, firewall default rules may also block all inbound services. From the main menu, choose Security -> Rules, add a new rule for Inbound Services with a service name of "ANY" and an action of "ALLOW always." Then, move your new rule up until it is the first rule in the Inbound Services section. Finally, make certain that this rule is enabled by checking the Enable column.

For other brands and models of routers, you may check if there are similar firewall settings. If the router is set up to block all access from the outside to the inside, you will not be able to login to your home computer(s) from your iPhone/iPod Touch when it is on 3G or EDGE.

  7. How to setup motion detecton to trigger video recording??

Motion detection can be set up to monitor your home when you are out.

    1. First, you need define two time intervals each day, to let the server know when you like to enable motion detection, to trigger video recording. For example: 09:30:00 - 16:30:00, means motion detection is on only between 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
    2. Secondly, you need give a motion trigger threshold for each time interval. The threshold is a scale between 1 and 100, and 100 is the hardest to trigger recording. Following steps will show you how to choose this number on your iPhone:
      • Login to the server from your iphone, motion setup info will be displayed under the video image.
      • Enable "Display detected motion (red blocks) on top of video?"
      • Then on your iPhone, set the motion detection time interval to include current time on your computer, and choose a threshold value of 30 as the first start. When you tap on "Save", you should see that time interval on your server becomes highlighted as green.
      • You will see the server diaplay "Prepare for motion detection......" for about 30 seconds, then the motion detection will be ready. You can wave your hand in front of the camera to see the detection motion (shown as red blocks on top of video image).
      • At the same time, the motion activity will be displayed below: "Current motion activity: xx. (Recording will start if activity is above the threshold).". If the number 'xx' is bigger than the threshold you choosed, video recording will be triggered. You can alway go back to your iPhone to adjust the threshold.
      • Each time recording is triggered, the server will record for 30 seconds. If the motion activity is still above the threshold, recoding will continue; otherwise, recording will stop.
